The Carlyle Group Appoints Sunil Kaul as Senior Director

Hong Kong – Global private equity firm The Carlyle Group today announced that Sunil Kaul will join Carlyle Asia Partners (CAP) as a Senior Director – Financial Services. Based in Singapore, Mr. Kaul’s regional role will focus on expanding CAP’s success in the financial services sector across the region. He will join the firm on August 1st.

In addition to Sunil, we have Patrick Siewert, former Group President of Coca-Cola Asia and Herman Chang, former Managing Director of Delphi Asia Pacific, as Senior Directors focusing on the retail & consumer and industrial sectors, respectively.”

CAP is one of the most active investors in the financial services sector in Asia, having invested more than US$2.5 billion in Asian financial institutions including China Pacific Insurance (Group) Co. Ltd, Housing Development Finance Corporation, KorAm Bank and Ta Chong Bank. Mr. Yang said, “The financial services sector is one of the most attractive investment areas and Sunil will be an important part of our investment going forward.”

Established in 1997, CAP makes control and strategic minority investments in companies across the Asia ex-Japan region. It is advised by a team of 38 investment professionals based out of six offices in Hong Kong, Mumbai, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney.

Mr. Kaul has more than twenty years’ experience in retail, corporate and consumer banking. He joins Carlyle from Citi, where he was President of Citibank Japan and a member of the Citi Global Management Committee. Prior to this position, Kaul was based in Singapore as Asia Pacific Regional Head of Citi’s Retail Banking and CitiBusiness. During this period, he played a key role in the development of Citi’s retail franchise in China and the integration of the KorAm bank in Korea. Mr. Kaul spent 18 years at Citi, first in India and later in New York, in a variety of transaction banking and business development roles.

Mr. Kaul earned his Post Graduate degree in Management from the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, India and a Bachelors degree in Technology (Electrical Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India.
