The Carlyle Group Names Former Vought Aircraft Industries CEO Elmer Doty Operating Executive for Aerospace and Defense Group

Firm Now Has 29 Operating Executives Helping to Create Value


Washington, D.C. – Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group today announced that Elmer L. Doty, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc., has joined the firm as an Operating Executive for the Aerospace and Defense team.


As an Operating Executive, Mr. Doty will provide strategic guidance to Carlyle professionals throughout the investment process, from sourcing to acquisition to exit, and advise portfolio company executives on management, operational and growth strategies. He joins a group of senior business leaders – with an average of 40 years of experience -- who serve as Carlyle Operating Executives across a range of industries.


Adam Palmer, Carlyle Managing Director and Head of the Aerospace and Defense team, said, “Elmer has an outstanding 35-year track record of leadership and value creation. Before becoming President and CEO of Vought, Mr. Doty was Executive Vice President and General Manager of the combat vehicle division of United Defense. He came to United Defense from FMC Corporation, where he held a number of general management and leadership positions in heavy machinery for mining, oilfield and agriculture. He began his career in General Electric’s manufacturing management development program in the power generation and nuclear business units.


Mr. Doty earned his master’s degree in mechanical engineering and his bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Missouri.
