City of Copenhagen Awards The Lighthouse on Amerika Kaj; The Carlyle Group received the Copenhagen architectural prize for “The Lighthouse” on Amerika Kaj at Copenhagen Freeport on Thursday. The city called it “A cool house for a cool place”.

Copenhagen, Denmark – On Thursday October 30, Pia Allerslev, Copenhagen’s Culture and Recreation Mayor, presented the city architectural award to The Carlyle Group for one of the most successful new buildings of the year in Copenhagen: The Lighthouse on Amerika Kaj at Copenhagen Freeport. The Lighthouse was nominated along with six other projects in which “the architecture reflects the character of the area and contributes to the overall perception of Copenhagen as a city with high quality urban environment”. The Lighthouse is particularly noted for its 48 metre slanting tower with staggered balconies and was designed by Lundgaard and Tranberg Arkitekter.

Pia Allerslev selected The Lighthouse for the award:
“With its simple block delineation, the building stands out as an architectural concept. The architects have succeeded excellently with the black slated facades as they are both aesthetically pleasing and have solved the noise problems of the railway in the design of the facade and choice of materials. It stands as a residential sculpture that reintroduces some of the magic and absurdity of the harbour milieu. The building is a most interesting construction and well finished. It is a cool house for a cool place.”
